Su. Yang 杨苏 was born and raised up in China. She is a feminist art scholar and an artist working with painting, photography, video, and short film. She completed her Ph.D. in visual, Asian cultural, gender and sexuality studies at the University of Melbourne in 2019. Yang received a M.F.A. in painting at the State University of New York at Buffalo (2014) and a B.A. in design (arts and crafts) at Tsinghua University in China (2010).
Yang’s doctoral research project investigated artistic representations of women in China to reveal how the recent Chinese conceptualization of feminism as “feminine-ism” affected the theorization of women’s art in Chinese art criticism. She drew on case studies of new generation Chinese feminist artists to reframe the representation of women from a feminist perspective.
Yang’s short film Beauty won Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF)’s inaugural Powershorts Short Film Competition and was screened at Exclusive MIFF 2017 Preview Screening. She was a selected artist-in-residence at the prestigious art organizations including Cowwarr Art Space in Australia in 2019 and Artscape Gibraltar Point in Toronto in 2016.
Yang has had successful solo exhibitions in the US and Australia that have been noted by the Chinese Ministry of Culture’s official website and journal, and have been reviewed extensively in Chinese press including Art China, Arton, China Craft & Art, Sohu News, Tsinghua University, China Writer, Hongkong Phoenix, Art Info, and etc. Internationally, her work has been reviewed by English press including the University of Melbourne, So Parts in France, Feminist Art Collection in Canada, Women in Art, SUNY Buffalo, and Art Voice in the USA.
Yang has also exhibited her work in group exhibitions internationally including at Trocadero Artspace, Lion Arts Centre, Margaret Lawrence Gallery, and George Paton Gallery in Melbourne and South Australia, Toronto Reference Library and OCAD Art Museum in Toronto, Anderson Gallery in the US, Tsinghua University and 798 District in Beijing.
Yang has presented her papers at international feminist art and academic conferences at elite universities and prestigious galleries in Canada and Australia including Feminism Renewal Art Network Symposium at Art Gallery of South Australia, Feminist Art Conference 2016 at Artscape in Canada, the Art Association of Australia and New Zealand 2017 Conference at University of Western Australia, Issues in Asian Art Research Symposium at University of Melbourne, the Transnational in Asian Art Symposium at Australian National University, the 10th Research Symposium for Chinese PhD Students and Scholars in Australia at Monash University, The 10th International Somatechnics Conference at University of Queensland and Southern Cross University in Australia.
