Su. Yang 杨苏 was born and raised up in China. She is a feminist art scholar and an artist working with painting, photography, and video. She is currently doing her Ph.D. research at The University of Melbourne. Yang received her MFA from SUNY Buffalo in the USA (2014) and a BA from Tsinghua University in China (2010).

Her current research aims to investigate the ideologies that encourage women to conform their appearances to the changing dominant standards of “ideal female beauty” in contemporary China. This in-depth study complements her own paintings, photographs, and videos, in which she presents the visible impulse of these invisible ideologies upon to change women’s bodies. Yang creates female images to resist the cycle of producing and conforming to male (heterosexual) desire rather than representing women as beautiful objects.

Yang’s short film Beauty won Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF)’s inaugural Powershorts Short Film Competition and was screened at Exclusive MIFF 2017 Preview Screening. She was a selected artist-in-residence at the prestigious art organization Artscape Gibraltar Point in Toronto in 2016.

Yang has had successful solo exhibitions in the US and Australia that have been noted by the Chinese Ministry of Culture’s official website  and journal, and have been reviewed extensively in Chinese press including Art China, Arton, China Craft & Art, Sohu News, Tsinghua University, China Writer, Hongkong Phoenix, Art Info, and etc. Internationally, her work has been reviewed by English press including the University of Melbourne, So Parts in France, Feminist Art Collection in Canada, Women in Art, SUNY Buffalo, and Art Voice in the USA.
